"World peace starts in the family," he said. "All mothers have the chance to raise healthy, hopeful, peaceful children. Fathers should be helpful in that. Give a peace name to your child. Give children peaceful toys to play with. This is important. Leaders of nations get their start in families." The author of What War Taught Me About Peace and Planet of Hope Muller said, "People will be inspired by your efforts for peace. Do something for the planet. Volunteer your time. Donate to good causes." Muller, who decided to devote his life to seeking peace after growing up during the horrors of World War II said, "Our history is a history of wars, but people themselves start these movements. I started as a hopeless young man when I joined the United Nations, but I have become very hopeful." On the global scene Muller said that the recent wave of peacemaking in Afghanistan, Cambodia, Nicaragua and South Africa has been interrupted by an accident in the peacemaking wave by a man in Iraq who does not understand this. "In my opinion we are over the hump," said Muller. "At the present moment there are thirty-eight wars going on on the planet, almost all inside nations. The number of wars is diminishing. Today three times more people are killed in automobiles than in wars."
He drew his greatest round of applause when he said, "Priorities have changed. Today the first priority is to take care of our planet. Leaders today are more concerned about whether our oxygen might disappear. They are no longer interested in war." Robert Muller spoke to about three hundred people at the peace rally at the Lakeland Civic Center on 31 December 1990.
