The following might be a new form of literature, a broad scale world literature:

It started on 11 June 1994 when during a conference in Santa Barbara, California on the meaning of life and death, Barbara Gaughen, a specialist of the media, informed the participants that there were exactly 2000 days left to the first of January 2000 and that “anyone who would write down one idea every day would end up on 1 January 2000 with 2000 ideas. She asked if there was anyone in the audience who would be ready to do that” I lifted my hand, “Yes, I will do it.” I did and on 1 January 2000 I had written more than 2000 ideas and reached 6000 in 2003.

The unexpected outcome is the almost automatic production from the voluminous index of specific collections of ideas on almost any subject one can imagine. Internet can produce them automatically. Ideas on peace alone number 252 pages! Innumerable articles, even volumes can thus be born on almost any conceivable subject.

Dear reader, do the same: write down your ideas and dreams every day. Your life will be immensely enriched. It will gain meaning and the gratitude of your descendents when they will read them.



And one advice: write down immediately the ideas and dreams which come to you, wherever you are, whatever they are and whenever they come. If not, a short time after that they will be gone.

Who knows, perhaps this new, global, world humanity-wide literature might change the evolution of the Earth and humanity for the better and toward an incredibly great, good future.

In 1969, when I was Director of the UN budget, I once jotted
down this note:
'The 'United States maintains around the world 429 major military bases, 2900 smaller bases, one million military personnel, 500,000 members of their families, 275,000 foreign workers, and spends for that between five and six billion dollars a year.
In 1969, the UN budget was 168 million dollars and the total number of international civil servants of the UN and of all its specialized agencies and world programs, including secretaries, was 40,000.'

And with that, the UN is supposed to deal with all the major problems of this planet from peace to human rights, from health to education, from development to the environment, from outer space to the atom, etc. In my view, the opponents of the UN budget should get their heads examined and be straightened out by their voters. The people should scream at their governments for their lack of serious financial support of their world organization.

My 80th birthday anniversary. At the age of eighty I have lived so much, dreamt, learned and experimented so much that I could consider myself a fulfilled human being. Alas I still see so much to learn, to try, to succeed, to love. Should I feel desperate? No, I should feel like a young adolescent.

Reflection For Peace

May the divine LOVE
nurture and help me become
an INSTRUMENT OF PEACE.
May there be PEACE on earth.

I am giving peace a chance,
it means
JUSTICE, LOVE, KINDNESS
in my thoughts, in my writings,
in my heart, in my words,
in my actions, in my hands,
in my eyes, in my soul.

For the war is not only around me
but perhaps trapped...
in my thoughts, my writings,
my heart, my words, my actions,
my hands, my eyes, my soul...

So I begin today, for tomorrow will be much too late,
day-by-day progress is made
waves of love are attained:
for those who lose dreaming are lost,
for what I am only part of what I create.
I am a child of this universe,
a peacemaker,
a JOY to the world.

When after World War II I said to my father that I wanted to become a peacemaker he answered, “There are no peacemakers. There are only war makers. You will lose your time and efforts. You better become a hatmaker like me and your grandfather.”

Well, today there are thousands of peacemakers in the world and the war makers are on the retreat. What is also needed now is a large number of paradise makers, paradisers.

God is the image we have of our own still unachieved perfection. Reference to God is therefore the yardstick and way to perfection, both individual and collective.

Is it possible that we have never tried to understand the history of the universe and of our role in it? Yes, it is quite possible. It is even a fact.

Is it possible that seeing now this Earth as one globe, knowing all its elements, resources and limits, no one is wondering how it should be managed, cared for, preserved and loved? Yes, it is quite possible. It is even a fact.

Is it possible that having lived so long and knowing fairly well our paleontology, archaeology and history, no one is trying to visualize seriously the future? Yes, it is quite possible. This too is even a fact.

Well, if all this is possible, is it not vital that someone should come along who would do it for us? Yes, and this someone is the UN and its agencies, nurtured by all cultures, beliefs, learning, experiences and efforts of all nations, by the hopes, dreams and faith of all people, by the thoughts of all great men and women, living and dead.

And is it possible that you and I have a responsibility and role to play? Yes, it is possible. It is even certain.

Therefore we should know the UN, care for the UN, preach the UN, teach the UN, love the UN and advocate the UN until our death and even beyond.

Humanity has lived for millions of years on this planet without changing it much. But all of a sudden, new knowledge and ways of living are constantly bursting to the forefront, affecting deeply the Earth. The long-term consequences might be a catastrophe for the Earth, her vegetations and species and for humanity.

It remains for humanity to develop multiple, non-conflicting, harmonious allegiances and devotion to:

humanity
our planet

eternity
and God.

It is no little achievement that humanity at long last has defined what it wants and what it rejects. We are now trying to achieve these objectives for all humanity. That is the great historical challenge of our time, the duty of our generation and the momentous task of the UN. May all people of the world make it their objective too, and be members of the UN whose Charter begins with the words:

'We, the Peoples of the United Nations..."

Is it possible that despite our thousands of years of history, our religions, our research, our sciences, our penetration into the infinitely large and infinitely small, humankind has never really tried to understand the meaning of life? Yes, it is quite possible. It is even a fact.

Idea Dream

When we look at the big cities, the skyscrapers of banks, producers and advertisers along the throughways and highways, at the airports and seaports, at the enormous newspapers, at the restless television advertisements, we definitely see no longer a planet of God.

Ever more seldom do we see areas of nature, churches and houses of prayer. Mother Earth and Father God are reduced everywhere. The air and the atmosphere are more and more polluted and the waters are being too. The seas and oceans, due to their vastness and surface, are only beginning to be affected along the Earth’s shores and through the extraction of their aquatic animal species’.

Where is all this going to lead us? Are we on the right path of further evolution or the wrong path and end of our evolution?

That is a fundamental question which faces the human species at the beginning of this 3rd millennium.

Humanity, especially the western world must absolutely aim at more simple and frugal living. To get there a world consumers revolt, nay revolution must take place:

  • a world-wide revolution against the soft drinks and standard eating products spread out all around the globe by western multinational corporations
  • a revolution against nation-wide promoted products and consuming habits

On the other side of the coin there should be honoring and consuming preferentially local products and consumer habits.

Every human being should be devoted to such revolutions.

It would be interesting to publish the statistics of the number of humans lost by warrying nations during the 20th century: France and Germany in World War I, Hitler’s Germany, Stalin’s Russia and the USA in World War II (including the deaths caused by the atom bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki), and after World War II (Vietnam, the Gulf War, Iraq). And we call ourselves a civilization!

I think the time has come for the united community of nations in the UN to create a UN Specialized Agency of Big Cities. The work of the United Nations Habitat Agency in Nairobi is vastly overrun by the dimension of the facts. I similarly recommend that the population work of the UN be made into a full UN Specialized Agency of World Population.

In our fast moving, modern society mostly dominated by the rich and powerful, it would be good for governments and men and women of justice to create opposite words when some words are becoming tools of power.

I give an example: there is a lot of literature, media, advertisements and education promoting the words enterprise and entrepreneurs. Well, we need also opposite words, like deenterprising and deentrepreneurs. There is also the almost holy word corporation. Well, we also need businessmen who would consider themselves to be decorporated. Dear reader, please come up with examples.

I should start a list of ideas and dreams which were implemented: for example, the creation of the United Nations Development Program, of several specialized UN agencies and programs, the application to the whole world of the European road signals, just to give these few cases.

It might be useful to establish such a list. We would probably feel very good when reading it.

I dreamt of a university in which each chair would bear the name of a famous peacemaker.

My dream became true: the proposal was adopted by the UN University for Peace in Costa Rica.

Zhou En Lai also asked the Secretary-General: "Why do all world agencies have their seats in New York, Washington, Paris, London, Geneva, Rome, The Hague, etc? Why is not a single one located in the poor countries, for example here in Asia, where two-thirds of the world's population live? Don't we count in the world? Couldn't the Security Council meet once in awhile in our area? We would be happy to receive it in China, or in any other country of Asia."

That was in 1972. Twenty years later, the situation is still the same.

After that conversation I convinced the Secretary-General to convene the Security Council in other capitals, closer to the people and trouble spots. Indeed, it met shortly thereafter in Addis Ababa and in Panama. But when I left the Secretary-General's office, this policy stopped and was never resumed.

Zhou En Lai, for his part, obtained that the newly created UN Environment Program be established in Nairobi, Kenya. Since then also, China uses its veto in the Security Council to ensure that new Secretary-Generals be appointed mostly from other than western countries.

If someone would collect or create an encyclopedia of all the words in the world starting with nation and national, it would be a very sizable volume. And if someone would do the same for the words global or world, it would be an insignificant number.

This proves that the world, the Earth do not have the priority, the love and the care of humans which nations have. Hence the mismanagement, the non-government of our round Earth which should have priority over nations. Will we be able to change that situation? The United Nations cannot because it is a child, a prisoner of nations

You want to do something for peace? Here are a few simple things:

Display the UN flag
Celebrate International Day of Peace (the third Tuesday of September)
Celebrate United Nations Day (24 October)
Pray for the UN and for peace
Join or create a United Nations Association in your community.

By supporting the UN, you will force your government to abide by the rules of the UN Charter. And if governments obey the Charter, there will be peace on Earth.

If only the huge military budgets of this planet could be subjected to the same extreme scrutiny as is the tiny budget of the United Nations. Astronomic sums would be spared to the taxpayers and much waste to this planet.

Traveling by air one late evening from Santa Barbara to Los Angeles I managed to sit in the last row of the plane and to see the illuminated land and seashore below. I saw city after city illuminated by millions of housing and automobile lights. Did it look beautiful? No. It looked like a massive invasion.

If I were a film producer, I would make a video of these sites at night.

People would be shocked to see it and would ask themselves how they can live in such cities and how this phenomenon can be spreading all over the world.

UNESCO reports that nations spend more money on teaching international relations in universities than they spend on the entire United Nations and its thirty-two specialized agencies! There is something basically wrong with that.
