Religion & Spirituality

~ Idea 2553 ~
We have statistics and surveys on almost any conceivable subject on Earth except one which is fundamental: happiness.

There is need for a whole education, science, inquiries and surveys of happiness.

As a first step the UN could inquire what definition of happiness each nation, each culture has, since the pursuit of happiness is or should be the main purpose of government. And we should ask religions to do the same: What were the messages of their founders, the messengers from the universe, Jesus, Buddha, Mohammed, the Great Spirit of the indigenous people?

Remarkable Conversations With Our Elders
by Kathy Ward

How does happiness relate to health?

A group of elders and I gathered to talk about happiness, feelings of contentment and health.
...The most important part of a tree is not the trunk, but the root. One has to nurture the root more than any other part, because once the root becomes weak, the rest of the tree will get ill, weak and eventually will die. If we compare the trunk with our body, the branches represent the organs, the leaves, flowers and fruits represent the mind, creativity our dreams, and the root our soul and deepest heart desires. The roots are the spirit within and when we don't nurture and take care of our spirit, we get weak physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Regardless our present age, the root needs to be maintain, care for and nurture daily for the rest of us to function, progress and live a better quality of life.

So, how we nurture our spirits?

Elizabeth, 87: With a sense of humor, it is the spice of life and a life saver.

Faith, 91: I pray and then I take a walk. When I pray I feel better and more relax. I then take a walk to set my thoughts free, otherwise when I keep thinking about what makes me sad, or worry, the issues seems to get bigger and nothing else matters. I do not like that so I take a walk.

Pat, 82: I nurture my spirit making other people happy. However, happiness and a feeling of contentment are two different things but we need to get out of ourselves and focus on the many things we can do for others, and the more we do, the more content we will be.

Roger, 80: I think that first we need to realize that life dishes out challenges to us all. How we deal with those challenges determines our state of mind. Learning to focus on a solution, rather than on the problem, forces us to have a more positive attitude.

Kathy 39: Another aspect of maintaining a feeling of well-being is activity. When our minds are focused elsewhere, we alleviate the stress and tension caused by focusing only on our problems. Any meaningful activity you enjoy, whether it be reading, listening to music, gardening, walking your dog, baking apple pies for the homeless or a dear friend, talking nature walks, organizing community service projects, meditating or simply chatting with a family member or a friend, can give you a mental and physical boost.

Valerye 94: We need to understand that happiness is a choice. We can create our own happiness and that it is foolish not to make yourself happy.

Danny 62: I work as a volunteer in the White House. The other day, a man came to see the Christmas decorations and I was assigned as the docent to guide a group of people. He came along with us but was not having a very good disposition and most of his remarks where very unpleasant. I did not responded to any of his provocations. As the man was leaving the White House I said to him; "thank you so much for coming, it was very nice having you with us, have a great day." The man turned and looking at his wife and said to her "what's wrong with this man, is he trying to make me happy?" Danny continues... when I work and volunteer my time to help others I decide to be happy and make others happy being kind, patient and joyful. I do not let rain ruin my parade.

Kathy: As we continue to explore the mind-body connection, we are beginning to see how tension caused by everyday worries and concerns can block the flow of good energy that keeps us well. Then
"Life Force Energy" is disrupted or weekend and emotional or health problems tend to occur. Imbalances can be caused from many situations occurring in our lives, such as: emotional or physical trauma, injury, negative thoughts and feelings, including fear, worry, doubt, anger, anxiety, negative self-talk, toxicity, nutritional depletion, destructive lifestyles and unhealthy relationships, neglect of self and lack of love for oneself or others, from emotions that are not expressed in a healthy way... The practice of happiness brings us vigor, good energy and a disposition towards life and as love, they help us to open doors, see possibilities and embrace opportunities to better our lives and the lives of others.

Let's start the new year with a "Hunting for Happiness Campaign" What ideas come to mind to bring good energy, happiness and love into our lives?

Valerye: Wear more happy colors, a very important thing when we dress. Remember to wear a smile on your face. It is charming and makes you popular.

Roger: Let's vote for the happiest person in our community. Someone that shows good disposition, practice kindness, and possesses a good sense of humor.

Pat: All of us could put together a scrap book of 'the happiest moments in our lives' and share it with everyone else.

Danny: Let's read a good book.

Kathy: Great idea Danny! I have brought you a wonderful book and I would like to read a couple of pages of it about Happiness, written by Robert Muller, "Most of All They Taught Me Happiness" ... Page 177, about "What Each One Of Us Is Doing For Peace? We always rely on others to work for PEACE, justice and a better world but what are we doing, each one of us?

Happiness dispels unhappiness as light dispels obscurity.

Therefore, switch on the happiest currents you can find in yourself.

First you have to believe in happiness and then you will find it. It is first and foremost a question of faith.

Robert's Golden Sayings
How many heads of state know the meaning of the name of their country and capital? Many soldiers are ready to kill and to be killed for a name whose meaning they do not even know.
*
In the United States I lived in Dobbs Ferry (there was a ferry run by a man named Dobbs during the last century) in the Hudson Valley (after the explorer Hudson; but formerly called by the Indians Mahicannituck, the great waters in constant motion), near New York (the new English York in the new world). In France I lived in St. Gix (Holy water, from the Celtic word gix, water), on the chemin de la Vie de L traz (the via strada of Julius Caesar), near Divonne (the Divine Waters of the Romans). I felt good to know that. I love to know the history of the places where I live. It enriches me.
*
More recent names of countries, such as the United States and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, are not natural, poetic names. The political objective shows in them. What sad, poor names they are compared with names of virtues or nature. Furthermore they want to unite what is below, not what is above. Why not a United World or a World Union instead of states and republics?

Ending War

INTRODUCTION (Ideas 501 to 600)
A Declaration of Interdependence*

*This Declaration was promulgated on 24 October 1975, United Nations Day, by the Philadelphia World Affairs Council in Independence Hall, Philadelphia, in the presence of the UN Secretary General and all heads of the UN specialized agencies.

WHEN IN THE COURSE OF HISTORY the threat of extinction confronts humankind, it is necessary for the people of The United States to declare their interdependence with the people of all nations and to embrace those principles and build those institutions which will enable humankind to survive and civilization to flourish.

Two centuries ago our forefathers brought forth a new nation: now we must join with others to bring forth a new world order. On this historic occasion it is proper that the American people should reaffirm those principles on which the United States of America was founded, acknowledge the new crises which confront them, accept the new obligations which history imposes upon them, and set forth the causes which impel them to affirm before all peoples their commitment to a Declaration of Interdependence.

We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all human are created equal: that the inequalities and injustices which afflict so much of the human race are the product of history and society, not of God or nature, that people everywhere are entitled to the blessings of life and liberty, peace and security and the realization of their full potential: that they have an inescapable moral obligation to preserve those rights for posterity: and that to achieve these ends all the peoples and nations of the globe should acknowledge their interdependence and join together to dedicate their minds and their hearts to the solution of those problems which threaten their survival.

To establish a new world order of compassion, peace, justice and security, it is essential that humankind free itself from the limitations of national prejudice, and acknowledge that the forces that unite it are incomparably deeper than those that divide it – that all people are part of one global community, dependent on one body of resources, bound together by the ties of a common humanity and associated in a common adventure on the planet Earth.

*This Declaration was promulgated on 24 October 1975, United Nations Day, by the Philadelphia World Affairs Council in Independence Hall, Philadelphia, in the presence of the UN Secretary General and all heads of the UN specialized agencies.

Let us then join together to vindicate and realize this great truth that humankind is one, and as one will nobly save or irreparably lose the heritage of thousands of years of civilization. And let us set forth the principles which should animate and inspire us if our civilization is to survive.

WE AFFIRM that the resources of the globe are finite, not infinite, that they are the heritage of no one nation or generation, but of all peoples, nations and of posterity, and that our deepest obligation is to transmit to that posterity a planet richer in material bounty, in beauty and in delight than we found it. Narrow notions of national sovereignty must not be permitted to curtail that obligation.

WE AFFIRM that the exploitation of the poor by the rich, and the weak by the strong violates our common humanity and denies to large segments of society the blessings of life, liberty and happiness. We recognize a moral obligation to strive for a more prudent and more equitable sharing of the resources of the earth in order to ameliorate poverty, hunger and disease.

WE AFFIRM that the resources of nature are sufficient to nourish and sustain all the present inhabitants of the globe and that there is an obligation on every society to distribute those resources equitably, along with corollary obligation upon every society to assure that its population does not place upon Nature a burden heavier than it can bear.

WE AFFIRM our responsibility to help create conditions which will make for peace and security and to build more effective machinery for keeping peace among the nations. Because the insensate accumulation of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons threatens the survival of humankind we call for the immediate reduction and eventual elimination of these weapons under international supervision. We deplore the reliance on force to settle disputes between nation states and between rival groups within such states.

WE AFFIRM that the oceans are the common property of humankind whose dependence on their incomparable resources of nourishment and strength will, in the next century become crucial for human survival, and that their exploitation should be so regulated as to serve the interests of the entire globe, and of future generations.

WE AFFIRM that pollution flows with the waters and flies with the winds, that it recognizes no boundary lines and penetrates all defenses, that it works irreparable damage alike to Nature and to humankind – threatening with extinction the life of the seas, the flora and the fauna of the earth, the health of the people in cities and the countryside alike – and that it can be adequately controlled only through international cooperation.

WE AFFIRM that the exploration and utilization of outer space is a matter equally important to all the nations of the globe and that no nation can be permitted to exploit or develop the potentialities of the planetary system exclusively for its own benefit.

WE AFFIRM that the economy of all nations is a seamless web, and that no one nation can any longer effectively maintain its processes of production and monetary systems without recognizing the necessity for collaborative regulation by international authorities.

WE AFFIRM that the civilized society, the institutions of science and the arts are never at war and call upon all nations to exempt these institutions from the claims of chauvinistic nationalism and to foster that great community of learning and creativity whose benign function it is to advance civilization and the health and happiness of humankind.

WE AFFIRM that a world without law is a world without order, and we call upon all nations to strengthen and to sustain the United Nations and its specialized agencies, and other institutions of world order, and to broaden the jurisdiction of the World Court, that these may preside over a reign of law that will not only end wars but end as well that mindless violence which terrorizes our society even in times of peace.

WE can no longer afford to make little plans, allow ourselves to be the captives of events and forces over which we have no control, consult our fears rather than our hopes. We call upon the American people, on the threshold of the third century of their national existence, to display once again that boldness, enterprise, magnanimity and vision which enabled the founders of our Republic to bring forth a new nation and inaugurate a new era in human history. The fate of humanity hangs in the balance. Throughout the globe, hearts and hopes wait upon us. We summon all humankind to untie to meet the great challenge.

Idea Dreams 6001-6500

~ Idea 6012 ~

I recommend to UNESCO and to Mrs. Bruntland, the head of the World Health Organization, to plan a World Conference on Death, not only human deaths, but the deaths of all species. Regarding humans, there would be a large number of subjects, for example the number of deaths each year in the world and by countries, the longevity, mortality and the disposal practices of countries burying or burning the bodies, etc. For example, in 2000 50.5 million persons died in the world, 1.2 million died for lack of water.

Robert's Golden Sayings
We have at least come to the point when most people no longer want war. Conflict, violence and wars are becoming immoral, despicable and out of fashion. No glory derives from them anymore. But there are still very powerful people who no longer want war but who do not want peace either, because it would cause them prejudice. They might even provoke conflicts to prove that peace is against human nature. Some businessmen, the military and fanatic ideologists are in this category.

Peace

~ Idea 411 ~ 25 August 1995

The world would be better off if instead of reading, hearing and watching bad news, horror stories and lots of violence served by so many newspapers, radio and TV stations, the children and people would hear and see programs of the United Nations and of their world agencies, educating them and enlisting them in the healing of the world and of humanity.

I propose the creation of a United Nations World Media Network to inform objectively and educate all world inhabitants, giving them hope and enlisting their help to achieve a better, happier world. The International Radio for Peace of the University for Peace is a great first example to follow.

My same fascination applies to the Hindu notion of Trikolonat: the one who is able to live on three planes - the plane of his internal life, of his daily life and of the life above, the heavenly, cosmic, angelic, spiritual life. This again is a cosmic characteristic of the human species: we can aggrandize ourselves from our internal and daily life to the totality of the universe, to the infinitely large. Again, this can apply to any group including humanity. Humanity has an internal life, a current life and a spiritual, cosmic life dimension. My participation in these lives aggrandizes my own personal life greatly.

The UN is a heroic organization: it tackles the most intractable problems of humanity: peace, justice, disarmament, human rights, racial equality, hunger, illiteracy, the environment, equality of the sexes, epidemics, drugs, violence, etc. As all heroes, it deserves at least some encouragement and love from the people.

Religion & Spirituality

~ Idea 3974 ~

My writing so many ideas and dreams begins to have some effect: in her magazine Humankind Advancing, Erika Erdmann, the assistant of Nobel Prize winner Roger Sperry, has opened a section of ideas and dreams inaugurating it with some of mine.

In Switzerland at the end of a conference on the United Nations and religions, the president of the conference had a box of little notebooks which he distributed to the audience, asking them to come up with ideas and dreams and to write them down, following my example. Several auditors asked for the floor immediately to tell their ideas.

May it become a world-wide movement of people participating in changing the world for the better. The benches of dreams are also making progress. After the conference a baker offered to donate ten such benches to the conference center and to the nearby convent of sisters.

My Testament to the UN
-A Contribution to the 50th Anniversary of the United Nations, 1995, Chapter 6

Arriving in Geneva, I was once received by a group of young people who drove me to my hotel. They asked me:
"How is it that you look so young and seem so enthusiastic and optimistic?"

My answer to them:
"It is because I work for the United Nations where I see that humans can succeed and work together. Like an artisan, I am happy because there is so much to do. If you want to feel like me, take an interest in the UN."

I give this advice to all young people of the world as well as to the elderly. I have observed that people working for UN associations and non-governmental organizations' get very old because they always have so much to do and they love it.

Holiday message 2005
From Barbara & Robert

Dear Readers of Good Morning World,

We are deeply grateful to all the readers of Good Morning World and send you our best wishes for the Holidays and a very Happy New Year.

Our wish. Our hope for world peace in 2006 is getting closer.

We are all contributing to the Earth becoming Paradise Earth. When we were created together with all the animals and we evolved into small groups in many places on the Earth, creating many languages, religions and many wars, that was not the bigger picture. It is only recently that we began to appreciate each other, to learn from each other and think seriously about becoming a world wide community with human rights for all a priority!

The European Union with 25 borderless countries is incredible when I think of the changes of nationality my family had to suffer in three European wars!

Humanity is now slowly but surely becoming one loving family thanks to each of you.

Good Morning World is helping us to communicate and to become Paradise on Earth.

Thank you for being a faithful reader and a blessed human.

Love, Robert and Barbara Muller

Planet Of Hope

The countries of this world should not be judged by their power, their arms, and their wealth, but by the happiness of their people. What would be the point of developing the world to the standard of living existing today in the U.S. and Europe, if the people having finally reached that stage, would not be happier than are the Americans and Europeans of today?

One is great only through the cause one serves. And in our time the greatest cause can only be the peace and happiness of all humanity.

Robert's Golden Sayings
Every human person has the right to say what kind of world he or she wants to live in. That individual perception is the root, the foundation of world democracy. No nation has the right to deny it.
*
Beyond world federalism and world government we need first and foremost a world democracy, a government of this planet for the people by the people. But the problem is so colossal and unprecedented that few political thinkers consider it. They feel more at ease discussing the number of strength of nuclear missiles needed to protect specific national corals.
*
Nations are infallible. They are never wrong. Each one says what the other should do, not what it will do. At foreign service schools, their diplomats are taught to lie: never confess; always deny; praise the merit of your nation and diminish that of your adversary; negotiate from a ‘bargaining position’ and if you cannot do otherwise accept a ‘fall-back position,’ but never start with the truth.

It is high time to put an end to these unethical and primitive practices and for the people no longer to applaud them.

My Testament to the UN
-A Contribution to the 50th Anniversary of the United Nations, 1995, Chapter 6

The United Nations is trying to bring about this indispensable change in attitude. But the process is slow, so terribly slow, and time is getting so short.

Have you done something for the UN of late? Have you ever done anything for it? If not, don't expect miracles from the UN and for it to be the savior of humanity and the planet.

A People's Summit for Departments of Peace was held in London, October 18 & 19 2005, in the spirit of the United Nations General Assembly's Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace (A/RES/53/243 dated 13 September 1999) and its definition of a culture of peace as "a set of values, attitudes, modes of behaviour, and ways of life that reject violence and prevent conflicts by tackling their root causes to solve problems through dialogue and negotiation among individuals, groups, and nations" (A/RES/52/13). The purpose of the Summit was to strengthen and grow the international movement for a culture of peace and for government Departments of Peace and Ministries for Peace.

Ending War

~ Idea 3550 ~

The great minds in Washington who created the post-war world political and economic system were geniuses. Their strategy consisted of:

- the decolonization of the existing empires of the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Portugal and Holland

- fundamental human rights as a basis for human society world-wide

- free enterprise to be the rule of the planet

- get rid of communism

- free trade must be gained through a General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade culminating in a World Trade Organization

- creation of an International Bank and International Monetary Fund ruled by Washington to issue money and loans well targeted around the world

- world economic growth to be fostered and financed everywhere through the creation of stock exchanges, their rescue when in deficit, forgiveness of debts, money injection

- use of tax surpluses resulting from all this to feed further economic growth

- overpopulation of the poor countries will provide one of the biggest markets in the world therefore do not oppose it

- deregulate everything to allow the supreme freedom of enterprise

- have people with money saved or inherited share in all this via stock markets, the banking system and speculation

All this to be working almost to perfection at the entrance of the 21st century and 3rd millennium and to work mainly to the profit of the US and other rich countries.

There is only one fundamental, unexpected trouble with it: the reckless destruction of the Earth and the non-consideration of the natural elements on which we live. This puts the whole system in jeopardy and mortal danger.

Dear Robert:

We have been receiving your wonderful daily messages for over three years.

You speak not only from your own heart but the hearts of many who are awakening to a better world.

I have dreamed of a peceful world for most of my 74 years and my wife for her 90. Even though I would not even play with toy soldiers in my youth I was forced to go to war in Korea. There I made a pact with God I would not kill and if He/She wanted me on the other side I would take the first bullet.

I was blessed with a war duty of ordering signal supplies for the front lines at night while I volunteered service teaching English at the Chosun Christian University during the days.

Thank you for giving us hope and inspiration as the world strives to rebuild itself in peace and service to others.

Peace

~ Idea 195 ~ 21 January 1995

In the 19th century and early twentieth, one of the main forms of violence was workers' violence. It led to several revolutions and to communism. Today, of all forms of violence, labor violence is minimal, even non-existent in most countries. Why? Because in order to cope with the problem, in 1919 the International Labor Organization was created in which governments, employers and labor unions are represented and have developed a host of agreements, conventions, legislations, recourses, rights and methods to resolve labor conflicts and disputes in a peaceful, non-violent way. This example speaks highly for similar arrangements in the UN and in all its specialized agencies, namely a peoples' representation at the UN and professional representatives in all agencies.

Thanks to the UN, international conflicts have also been reduced to a minimum and could have been eliminated if it had not been for the cold war between the US and the USSR. The UN did a similar, remarkable job in decolonization and in reducing racial violence, especially apartheid.

Thanks to the UN Security Council which took up the question of aircraft highjacking, that form of violence has considerably diminished in the world while airtransport and airtravel have mushroomed to unprecedented levels.

Today, most violence is among ethnic groups, religions, youth, in cities and in the family. Would it not be beneficial to create an International Ethnic Organization, an International Religious Organization, an International Youth Organization and an International Family Organization on the pattern of the ILO? The cost would be minimal compared with the huge benefits gained. The miracles produced by the UN and the ILO should be repeated in other fields.

During my four decades at the UN I have noticed that when humans decide to do something, they can do it. From a pessimist I have become an optimist and a believer in the human species. I thank the UN for it.

Planet Of Hope

~ Idea 2050 ~
Western countries, especially the United States, have their mouths full of fundamental human rights and are ready to bomb other countries who do no fulfill such rights.

But we should claim, at the beginning of the 21st century and third millennium, the basic human right not to be enlisted in an army and to kill other human beings for national or religious causes .

Killing another human being is murder, but nations give medals and honors for it. It is high time to claim that new fundamental human right. Without it the human rights chapter of humanity is incomplete. Anyone being enlisted in an army and being trained to kill should have the right to come before the International Court of Justice and claim that this is the most flagrant injustice on this planet.

Conflicts must be solved by peaceful means and not with armaments, bombs, individual and wholesale murders.

Dear Robert, Barbara and all Good Morning World readers:

Our elder's Book Club has chosen "Most of All They Taught Me Happiness" The book club takes place every Saturday morning and it is very special because it is an intergenerational program where everyone is LISTENED TO. Meaning, two 14 years old and one 16 years old teenager also come to the meetings to help elders get ready and come to the library for our meeting. 8 elders; 94, 91, 87, 62, 89, 71, 82 and 97 years old, take this book club meeting very seriously and keep this appointment in their calendars looking forward to the next opportunity to meet with the kids and share their views and listen to theirs about Robert's meaningful message for a happy life.

Comments:
Q = What do you like the most about the book?
A = Magdalene, 94 years old responded. I like to chapter about U Thant on page 122. I learned a lot about his spiritual life style, Buddhism and his vision fostering cooperation and understanding among all nations under the principle of non violence; and the principle of unity in diversity. I have meditated a lot about this last one "unity in diversity", it means a lot of things good for humanity. I also marked another of his phrases... "I empty myself of myself ... I must forget that I am Buddhist and open myself to all my visitors, every that come daily to my office and want to share something with me. I must listen to them with an open mind."

Emily, 87 years old commented; "I have always tried to be happy. I was a professional ballet dancer and my husband was a musician. I have regretted all my life that I am not more intelligent. I would have like to have the intelligence of Eistein, to think and speak like him."

A= Carol, a 14 year old girl responded to Emily; "I do not understand how you could be happy being someone else. What about if you are happy just being yourself. Einstein was not a ballet dancer, he might not have had your grace and artistic skills. Happiness is not about what we do not have but rather to be grateful, more appreciate of who we are and how unique and special our life is. Dr. Muller taught us in his book how to be happy with little but meaningful things. His love for Grethel, the black hen, the star in India... Dr. Muller was so proud of his father who happen to be a very talented hat maker and each hat was a work of art. I think Dr. Muller's message in his book is also about the meaning that we assigned to every circumstance and event in our lives and also about optimism."

At the end of our meeting I shared with all the participants Robert Muller's poem ... Decide to be happy.

I hope you have enjoyed our book club as much as I have.

to be continued... see you in our next meeting. Soon!
Peace be with you
Catalina

Ending War

~ Idea 3007 ~
Why, why, why?

Looking back in a hundred years humanity might say: why were not nations more enlightened in the year 2000? They had all the needed information about the planet and all life on it. They had experienced both good and bad, anything they could experience. They had all the growing lessons necessary.

Why did they not create a new, better, just world order when the cold war was over?

Why didn't the United States give the world a new, inspiring, hopeful vision of the future?

Why didn't nations at least strengthen ten-fold the United Nations which was a good beginning?

Why, why, why?

Well, let us at least use the year 2000 to begin building a new world order. Let us have a global vision, global concerns, global love for our Earth and all humanity, for a more beautiful, well-preserved planet and a peaceful, happy, fulfilled human family living on it.

Let us place ourselves in the year 3000 and do what we would be expected to do by the eyes, minds, hearts, hopes and souls of our descendants in that year.

May the heads of states meeting in the UN General Assembly 2000 be one of the greatest landmarks and achievements in human history. May they place humanity on the right path to a peaceful, happy, enlightened world. May they be applauded, honored and thanked by their descendants in the year 3000.

As a minimum, dear heads of state, place yourselves in the year 2100 and see what the world will say of your historic meeting in 2000 to respond to your ominous agenda "to focus on means to solve our primary global problems and to reform the means of global governance in order to meet the challenges of the 21st century."

My Testament to the UN
-A Contribution to the 50th Anniversary of the United Nations, 1995, Chapter 6

I receive many new designs for world or planetary flags. I always reply that we have a world flag officially adopted by all nations, the United Nations flag. People should display it prominently with respect and love.

At a conference in Strasbourg I saw a remarkable display of flags. The French flag in the middle, the flag of Europe on the left and the UN flag on the right. Similar miniature flag arrangements were in front of all delegates to remind them they were French, European and World citizens.

This good example should be followed everywhere in the world.

I always ask that a United Nations flag be displayed when I speak to any group or at a university. If none is available, I bring one along with me as a gift.

Since I deliver about 180 speeches each year, this amounts to 180 UN flags displayed in front of many thousands of people.

A world agency or new UN agency must be created to deal with the crust of the Earth, the stability, potentials and dangers of natural and manmade changes and movements of the Earth’s crust. Human changes through water barrages, excessive constructions, transportation, underground and sea bottoms exploitations, atmospheric, weather and climatic changes are so important that they require a separate world institution working in close cooperation with the UN World Meteorological and Climate Organization.

Everyone can be a diplomat, a peacemaker, an artisan of a better world, even children and senior citizens. I could give many examples. I myself am a retired one-dollar-a-year Chancellor of the University for Peace. A retired railroad man, Irving Sarnoff, has created an association of friends of the United Nations. Another friend, former Ambassador John McDonald, has created an Institute for Multi-Track Diplomacy, which includes peoples' diplomacy.

Religion & Spirituality

~ Idea 1301 ~1 February 1998
The gravest problem of our time is that the dominant values of the western world are business, wealth, prominence, power, strength, glory, sovereignty and not the perennial values taught by great religious leaders and philosophers over millennia: kindness, spirituality, compassion, justice, cooperation, gratitude, forgiveness, prayer, meditation, hope, and above all love.

Yes, what is missing most is love for humanity and for our miraculous mother Earth whose elements we are made of, depend on and will return to.

There are more and more peoples' organizations who are saying this. May their views be heard at the Peoples' Assembly 2000 which will accompany the UN General Assembly 2000. May they redress the current hierarchy of values and wrong course of history. That is the fundamental challenge on the eve of the 21st century.

If I were the Secretary General of the UN, I would call for a world conference on the meaning and fulfillment of human life and declare the next century the Century of Love and Happiness.

My Testament to the UN
-A Contribution to the 50th Anniversary of the United Nations, 1995, Chapter 6

One of my readers called me and expressed concern at the increase of militarism in the world and stepped up attacks aimed at the United Nations. I said to her that I had just returned from Costa Rica where I had found the secret of peace: the outlawing of the military.

Costa Rica is the only peaceful, democratic country in Central America. If tomorrow Costa Rica introduced an army, the military would want their budget increased every year. To effect their claims the military would predict, imagine or stage all kinds of trouble to prove their need for more resources. Therefore the suppression of the military is the secret.

In response, she told me the following anecdote:
"The other day I said to my five-year old boy that the military in El Salvador were killing children.

My son answered: 'They are stupid, because if they want to be liked by their people, they should not kill children. They should be nice.'

That is a good answer, son. Perhaps when you are grownup you will work for peace.

'Oh no', answered my boy, 'Because then the military will kill me'."

Planet Of Hope

The world is filled with people who want to dream, to love, and to be happy. Yet happiness, love, and dreams are nowhere to be found on the agendas of governments and of world affairs. There must be Something wrong with this planet's politics.

To be lasting, an artist or writer must be a prophet of good, hope, and happiness. He must deal with the essentials of life and give inspirational, uplifting, reassuring answers.

Ending War

~ Idea 2969 ~

I am more and more inclined to consider most of our leaders, especially our political, military and business leaders to be a destructive species on Earth. They believe they are great but they are in reality destroying the Earth for selfish, illusory human glory, power and greed. Few of them will leave a mark on their time and be remembered.

What do you think, dear Earth?

The Earth:
"I minded already when they were destroying, diminishing each other in ancient wars. But now these wars are so destructive of my nature. World peace would end that but then they will proliferate even more and bring me to an end with their ceaseless inventions, productions, economics, overgrowth, hyper-consumption, wastes, activities, running around not knowing what to do more to exploit and change me. Why do they need to achieve something and prove their self to others? Can they not be happy with what they have, with the incredible miracle of life they are, with the miracle I am?"

I:
I cannot answer that.

Look at the United Nations and you will see a perfect image of humanity, of the world and of yourself.

After thousands of years of bloody history, we are lucky to have at long last a universal organization. It is only common sense for the people to welcome it, to rejoice at it, to support, nurture and strengthen the UN?

>From a reader:

"I brought a friend along to visit the UN. She was thrilled by the 'light' shining from so many men and women dedicated to nurturing and preserving our human family. I myself, each time I visit the UN, I am moved to tears."

Pablo Casals too, cried every time he visited the UN.

Idea Dreams 6001-6500

~ Idea 6091 ~
Everything is looked at intensively when it is announced as new products, new means, new fashions, new ways of living, new aviation schedules, new tourism areas, etc.

Why do we not show the same care for the state of the human society, the world population, all of humanity, its many groups, happiness, etc.?

Humanity remains second rate and so does our Mother Earth. It is most urgent that humanity and the Earth should be given priority over science, technology, business and the media, which often do more harm than good.

Given the increase in the world population, the mounting pressure on resources and the danger that this planet might become unlivable, it is time to cleanse our lives of all that is harmful, wasteful and unnecessary. The suppression of national borders and the incredible duplication of national expenditures, especially of armaments are the first imperatives. But each citizen of this planet should also contribute asking himself or herself every day: what can I do for a better environment? Is what I do, buy and consume really indispensable?

Peace

~ Idea 1978 ~

The UN is in my view and experience the most mind-boggling effort ever in human history to come to grips with all of humanity's and of the Earth's problems and further successful evolution. It does this in three ways:

- the fight against all evil, errors and injustices;

- the fulfillment of our dreams: peace, justice, well-being, human rights, literacy, the environment, the preserving of the Earth, continued evolution, etc.

- the promotion of great philosophical concepts and ideals such as hope, faith, dreams, visions, prayer, gratitude, forgiveness, etc.

Is it not astonishing that the problem of climatic changes which was signaled to humanity in a first UN world climate conference in 1979, followed by a second on in 1987, took almost twenty years to get the attention of the world media and of many governments? I will never forget how in the late 1970's a number of climatologists (a new profession born in the wake of meteorology, i.e. weather forecasting) flooded the UN Secretary General and my office, as his assistant, with warnings that something basically wrong was going to happen to the world's climate. We convened the 1979 world conference because we believed that their warnings deserved attention. The conference predicted that around the year 2020 we will see changes in the ocean currents which would bring havoc to the climate of a number of regions. Well, we have already today the problems created by the Niño current. The US also reports that the last fifteen months had the highest temperatures in recorded history. But many articles say disparagingly that this is a pet-project of Vice President Al Gore who prefaced the first major, classic report of 1990 Climate in Crisis, by Albert K. Bates (The Book Publishing Co., Summertown, PO Box 99, TN 38483) which names some of the climatologists who sent us their warnings (Stephen Schneider is a name I remember because Schneider was my mother's name.)

Well, I am glad that at least one country on Earth has a vice presidency for global affairs. In a recent letter to Al Gore on the celebration of the year 2000 I mentioned to him that in my 2000 ideas I recommend the creation of the same vice presidency for global affairs in all countries on Earth. A draft treaty to prevent a further climate deterioration and increase in world temperatures is waiting for ratification by the US Congress which has its severest doubts about it. Of course because capitalism is not ready to accept such an obstacle in its ideology.

Robert's Golden Sayings
Peace is not only out there, but also in us, in the innermost depth of our soul. Individual peace therefore is the product of individual spirituality, as world peace is the product of world spirituality.

My Testament to the UN
-A Contribution to the 50th Anniversary of the United Nations, 1995, Chapter 6

The UN is really the organization of the down-trodden. It has no power, no riches, no warriors, no merchants on its side. It is the most noble attempt at world peace and justice ever in human history. Its power is essentially moral. Its survival and success therefore rest essentially in the hearts and support of the people. And it is those hearts and minds which the enemies of the UN are trying to poison. Beware, Oh people!

Religion & Spirituality

~ Idea 571 ~1 February 1996

I wish that one or several great philanthropists, would create World Commissions of Eminent Persons on some global problems which still need pressing attention. Here is an up to date list of those recommended earlier in these 2000 ideas:

a World Commission on a New World Economic System
a World Commission on the Media and Advertisement
a World Commission on Democracy
a World Commission on a Spiritual Renaissance
a World Commission on a new course for Humanity and the Earth
a World Commission on the Total Denuclearization of the Planet
a World Commission on the Demilitarization of the Planet
a World Commission on Ethics
a World Commission on World Priorities and Resources
a World Commission on Consumption
a World Commission on the Use and Conservation of Natural Resources
a World Commission on Corruption
a World Commission on Visions of the Earth and of Humanity in the 21st century and 3rd Millennium
a World Commission on the Nation State and National Government Reform
a World Commission on the Inefficiency of the Present World Political System due to staggering costly duplications between 185 nation states
a World Commission on a World Budget and Taxation System
a World Commission on Global Philanthropy and World Prizes

Philanthropists and other world personalities or foundations and institutes might also take up subjects on which I have recommended the holding of further world conferences by the United Nations.
