Since the fortieth anniversary of the UN, at least 16 good things have happened:
1. The end of the cold war.
2. The reunification of Germany.
5. Several summit meetings between the Presidents of the US and the USSR (Russia).
4. A first reduction and destruction of atomic arms.
5. A wave of peace settlements in Afghanistan, Cambodia, Nicaragua, Western Sahara and EI Salvador.
6. A revival of the effectiveness of the Security Council in response to the unilateral invasion of Kuwait by Iraq.
7. The independence of Namibia.
8. The end of apartheid.
9. The use of important UN peacekeeping forces in the internal conflicts of a member country, Yugoslavia.
10. The creation of a Central American Parliament and regular meetings between the Presidents of the Central American Republics.
11. The announcement by the President of the U.S. of work towards the creation of a free trade area from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego.
12. The declaration of the 1990's as the decade of International Law and of Cultural Development.
13. A third disarmament Decade is launched in the new political landscape resulting from the end of the cold war.
14. A new Development Strategy is adopted for the 1990's.
15. The Security Council held its first meeting ever at the heads of states level. It requested the Secretary-General to prepare his analysis and recommendations on ways of strengthening the capacity of the UN for preventive diplomacy, for peacemaking and peace-keeping by July, 1992.
16. France suspended its atomic tests .
