-A Contribution to the 50th Anniversary of the United Nations, 1995, Chapter 10 | | 4 March 1986 San Jose, Costa Rica, and New York United Nations Press release The International Council of the University of Peace appointed today Rodrigo Carazo as Council President for a period of two years. Mr. Carazo is a former President of Costa Rica.
The Council, the governing body of the University, also appointed Robert Muller as University Chancellor. Mr. Muller has been Assistant Secretary-General for the commemoration of the fortieth anniversary of the United Nations.
The University of Peace was established in 1980 by the General Assembly in resolution 35/55.
Under terms of its Charter, the University's aim is to promote "the spirit of understanding, tolerance and peaceful coexistence, to stimulate co-operation among peoples and help lessen obstacles and threats to world peace and progress".
To that end, it "shall contribute to the great universal task of educating for peace by engaging in teaching, research, post -graduate training and dissemination of knowledge fundamental to the full development of the human person and societies through the interdis¬ciplinary study of all matters relating to peace".
The proposal to establish the institution was made by Mr.
Carazo, as President of Costa Rica, in an address to the General Assembly in 1978.
The University is authorized to grant master's degrees and doctorates under terms established by the Council.
